Social cohesion and peaceful co-existence through engagement of youth in Khyber Agency

Under the RAHA program of UNHCR that was funded by the Japanese government, FRD implemented a project of social cohesion and peaceful co-existence between refugees and the hosting communities in Khyber Agency through engagement of youth and teenagers in sports and literary activities.

Scope of the project included rehabilitation of 2 sports grounds, construction of 2 dressing rooms in sports complex, provision of 132 sports kits to different sports teams and arranging 10 sports tournaments (i.e. cricket, football, volley ball and badminton ) in Tehsil Jamrud and Landi Kotal of Khyber Agency.

During the project FRD also arranged 11 story writing, painting and debate competitions along with 5 literary exchange sessions in which poets, writers and artists from both the refugee and hosting communities participated.

To bring the girls and women to action for peaceful coexistence and social cohesion and to polish their creative skills, sports events and painting competitions were arranged solely and separately for girls. Moreover, the sport ground in Government Girls High School was also rehabilitated to enable the girls to involve in healthy activities besides their education.

During the project implementation a spirit of peaceful coexistence between the refugee and hosting communities was observed, and it was noted that the youth and teenagers of both the communities not only appreciated one another’s talents, but were also found more receptive for learning from one another and for further polishing their own sporting and creative skills.

Keeping in view the successful progression of the project, FRD was contacted from other areas of FATA by youth and sportsmen for replicating the same project with in their areas. While FRD had always been working for acquiring the resources and replicating the same activities in other areas of the country in general and specifically in the areas of FATA.
