Global Hand Washing Day celebrated by FRD in 6 Refugee Villages of KP and conveyed the message of Happy Hand washing to around 3000 students and 100 teachers Global Hand washing Day is a timely reminder of the importance of good hand hygiene to prevent the spread of infections. Hands are one of the biggest spreaders of germs. Hand washing with warm water and soap is the most effective and inexpensive way to prevent the spread of germs and infections. Studies show that it lowers the transmission of diarrhea and colds both at work place and home.
Every year, around 200 million people from 100 different countries take part in Global Hand washing Day on October 15 to celebrate the day and remind the importance of hand washing with soup. Foundation for Rural Development (FRD) also celebrated the day in different Refugee Villages (RVs) i.e.Khazana, Akora Khattak, Gamkol, Khurasan, Hajizai and Kagan in collaboration with WASH Cluster, WHO and UNHCR with the objective to contribute in reducing morbidity and mortality rates especially to lower the transmission of diarrhea, cold and pneumonia.
In this regard FRD arranged different activities in schools that include Awareness regarding importance & benefits of the Global Hand Washing Day, Debate Competition and Practical Demonstration of Hand Washing Steps. All activities aimed at changing the behavior of communities through school children as ambassadors of hygiene for their families & community. Schools teachers and students actively participated in the event, it was quite satisfactory for the Hygiene promoters to see that the students correctly followed all the necessary steps of Hand Washing with soap during hand wash activity, while in debate competition students shared their views on the advantages of Hand Washing with soap and the disadvantages of hand washing without soap. Later gifts were given to winners of the competitions to encourage them for promotion of hand washing message.
At the end of day WHO distributed Dettol soap and IEC materials amongst participants in different schools. Global Hand washing Day is more than just a day, and hand washing with soap should be a healthy behavior for a lifetime. The message, the campaign and the tremendous impact of hand washing with soap are poised to inspire new waves of national consciousness and action.
